A fresh, citrusy and lightly sparkling mocktail, perfect for aperitif time or an elegant refreshing break.

Have you ever wanted to make something fresh and beautiful to serve, but without complicated cocktail techniques or hard-to-find ingredients? That happens to me quite often, especially when I want a drink that feels refined, colorful and lively with very little effort.

That is exactly why I love the Fragolosa Tonic: it brings together the sweetness of strawberry, the gentle bitterness of grapefruit, the sparkle of tonic water and a final touch of lemon that brightens everything beautifully. It is one of those easy recipes that looks far more sophisticated than it really is. Let’s see how to make Fragolosa Tonic.

Ingredients

Tools

  • Flared glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Citrus juicer
  • Small knife
  • Cutting board

Instructions

  1. Fill a flared glass with plenty of ice cubes so the drink starts out properly chilled.
  2. Pour the strawberry syrup over the ice, letting it settle evenly.
  3. Add the grapefruit juice, ideally well chilled, to keep the drink fresh and pleasantly citrusy.
  4. Top with very cold tonic water, using between 80 and 100 g depending on whether you want a stronger or lighter flavor.
  5. Finish with about ten drops of fresh lemon juice to brighten and balance the drink.
  6. Stir gently with a bar spoon or a long spoon, taking care not to flatten the tonic too much.
  7. Garnish with half a strawberry cut into a fan shape or with a twisted strip of grapefruit peel.
  8. Serve immediately, preferably in a chilled flared glass.

Bartender’s Tips

Find the right balance between sweetness and bitterness

The most important part of this recipe is balance. The strawberry syrup gives body and color, but the grapefruit juice and tonic water should still come through clearly. If you prefer a drier and more refreshing result, slightly reduce the syrup or increase the tonic water a little. If you want a softer, fruitier profile, keep the full amount of syrup and stay closer to the lower end of the tonic range.

Use well-chilled ingredients for the best result

Fragolosa Tonic tastes best when every ingredient is already cold. This small detail helps preserve the tonic’s fizz for longer and keeps the ice from melting too quickly and diluting the drink. Chilling the glass for a few minutes beforehand can also make a noticeable difference.

Stir gently to preserve the sparkle

Once the tonic water has been added, stir with a light hand. Mixing too vigorously will flatten the drink right away and take away the lively texture that makes it so enjoyable. A few slow movements from the bottom upward are enough to combine the flavors without losing the effervescence.

Garnish with purpose, not just for looks

A fan-cut strawberry or a twisted strip of grapefruit peel does more than decorate the glass. The strawberry visually hints at the sweeter side of the drink, while the grapefruit peel reinforces its aromatic citrus notes before the first sip. A thoughtful garnish really adds to the overall experience.
