While I was on vacation, I realized I was no longer receiving SMS messages on my phone. Everything had worked fine until just a few days earlier and I could still make and receive calls normally.
This is a real problem because among the messages I normally get are notifications from the bank about movements on my account, and verification codes from customer service systems to authorize online operations.
I asked for help, and a very knowledgeable person explained how to solve the problem of not receiving SMS on my phone.
Do you want to start receiving SMS again on your phone? Below are several solutions that can help fix the text-message reception issue.
Your Phone Isn’t Receiving SMS? Here Are 5 Solutions
There are essentially five things to check to identify and resolve the problem. They are usually enough to restore SMS functionality.
Follow these 5 steps in the order shown below.
✅ Solution 1: Restart Your Phone
Turning off your smartphone is the first thing to do. If possible, remove the SIM card, wait a few minutes, then insert it again and restart the phone.
If the battery cannot be removed, just power the phone off and back on after a few minutes.
Phones are like computers — when they get stuck, restarting them often restores all services. When it comes to SMS, restarting re-establishes connection to the mobile network and resets messaging services.
Often, this alone fixes the problem.
✅ Solution 2: Check SIM Card Storage
Every phone has a SIM card used to communicate with your mobile network provider.
SIM cards (Vodafone, TIM, etc.) have limited storage. When memory is full, new SMS messages can’t be received.
To check this, simply delete some old SMS messages. If this was the issue, the missing messages should arrive shortly afterward.
Otherwise, try sending an SMS to yourself from another phone.
✅ Solution 3: Check Messaging Settings
Go to Settings → Messages and check for any blocks or filters that may have been activated accidentally and are preventing messages from being delivered.
✅ Solution 4: Use Network Reset Codes
If the issue still isn’t solved, this next step will make you feel like a bit of a tech geek 😎
Enter these reset codes on your phone’s dial pad:
#33*1234*16#
#35*1234*16#
After entering each code, turn your phone off and back on, then test again.
✅ Solution 5: Take the Phone to Service Support
If your phone is not receiving SMS from any source, take it to a repair center for a technical check.
⚠️ Note:
This step does NOT apply if you are only missing SMS from one specific sender (e.g., you only don’t receive messages from your bank, but all others arrive normally).
Not Receiving SMS from Your Bank?
If the issue only affects messages from your bank, check the terms of your banking service and whether any contractual changes were made recently. Sometimes services are temporarily disabled and need to be reactivated by the customer.
Log in to your online banking account and verify that SMS notifications are enabled for your phone number.
If everything looks correct but you still don’t receive SMS, call your bank’s customer service or visit a branch.
Not Receiving SMS from Poste Italiane
If you don’t receive text messages from Poste Italiane, visit a Post Office — most locations have a dedicated PosteMobile support desk.
One common issue concerns SMS for credential recovery.
Once resolved, be aware of SMiShing scams:
Criminals send fraudulent SMS messages pretending to be from official services. These messages include malicious links and request personal information such as usernames, passwords, card details, or OTP codes.
Never share your banking credentials or click suspicious links received via SMS.
