The strategic strait between Iran and Oman has returned to the center of global attention after the war involving Iran, the United States and Israel.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Strait of Hormuz: a crucial artery for global energy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Strait of Hormuz<\/strong> is widely considered one of the most fragile points of the global energy system<\/strong>. This narrow maritime passage, only 33 kilometers wide between Iran and Oman<\/strong>, serves as a key corridor for the international energy trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every day around 17\u201318 million barrels of oil<\/strong> pass through the strait, representing roughly 20% of global oil demand<\/strong>. In addition, more than a quarter of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports<\/strong> transit the area, mainly coming from Qatar<\/strong>, one of the world\u2019s largest LNG producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Unimpresa Research Center<\/strong>, the ongoing war involving Iran, the United States and Israel<\/strong> has once again highlighted the strategic importance of this maritime route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Energy markets react quickly to geopolitical tensions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Any potential disruption in the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong> would represent one of the most severe shocks for global energy markets. Even the mere perception of risk can trigger strong price fluctuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the conflict began, global energy markets<\/strong> experienced strong volatility. Brent crude oil<\/strong>, which had been trading around $80 per barrel<\/strong>, surged above $95<\/strong>, with spikes exceeding $100 per barrel<\/strong> during peak tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

European natural gas prices<\/strong>, traded on the TTF exchange in Amsterdam<\/strong>, also rose significantly\u2014from around \u20ac30 per megawatt hour<\/strong> at the beginning of the year to nearly \u20ac45\u201350 per megawatt hour<\/strong> during the most intense phases of the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The immediate impact on fuel prices and the real economy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Energy market tensions quickly spread to everyday economic life. In Italy<\/strong>, fuel prices reacted almost immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average gasoline price<\/strong> exceeded \u20ac1.95 per liter<\/strong>, while diesel<\/strong> approached \u20ac1.90 per liter<\/strong>, marking increases of around 10\u201315 cents per liter<\/strong> compared with January levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These increases reflect both the rise in international oil prices<\/strong> and growing uncertainty surrounding global energy supplies<\/strong>, which affect production, transportation and logistics costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A global energy chokepoint<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the Unimpresa Research Center<\/strong>, the Strait of Hormuz<\/strong> is effectively a global energy chokepoint<\/strong>. Oil exports from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iran<\/strong> all pass through this narrow corridor on their way to Asia, Europe and the United States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A significant share of traffic also includes Qatar\u2019s liquefied natural gas exports<\/strong>, which have become increasingly important for Europe following the reduction of Russian gas supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even without a full closure of the strait, rising military and insurance risks<\/strong> have already made the transportation of oil and gas through the Persian Gulf<\/strong> more expensive, contributing to market volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe\u2019s challenge: diversify energy sources<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The crisis demonstrates that the global energy system remains highly dependent on a small number of sensitive geographic chokepoints<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Europe, the message is clear: it must accelerate investments in energy diversification<\/strong>, expand energy infrastructure<\/strong>, and strengthen its strategic autonomy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without these changes, the continent will continue to suffer the economic consequences of geopolitical crises in the Middle East<\/strong>, affecting inflation, industrial production and economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
